I heard on the Radio 4 forecast early this morning that 48mm of rain fell at Kenley in Surrey during yesterdays storms.Does any know what time and over what time period this fell? I had thunder at my location around midday and further thunder during the evening but only recorded 6.3mm up to 09h this morning.
Regards

Based on the SYNOP data (listed below - courtesy of OgiMet site), the sequence of events is as follows:-Richard Griffith wrote:I heard on the Radio 4 forecast early this morning that 48mm of rain fell at Kenley in Surrey during yesterdays storms.Does any know what time and over what time period this fell? 1200Z .. No PPN; OAT = 22.0degC
1300Z .. Intermittent rain - violent: visibility 1200M; OAT = 19.0degC
1400Z .. Rain, not freezing, heavy: visibility 10 km; OAT = 15.4degC
1500Z .. Rain, not freezing, moderate: visibility 12 km; OAT = 15.6degC
1600Z .. Rain, not freezing, slight: 16 km; OAT = 17.3degC
1700Z .. Rain (non-freezing) in past hour [but not at observation]: 25 km; OAT = 20.2degC
1800Z .. No PPN: 40 km [total rain period 06-18Z = 48 mm, but as no rain accumulation was recorded at 12Z, then we can infer that the 48 mm was recorded between 12 and 18Z.]; OAT = 19.5degC, Tmax = 23.0degC, possibly just before the intense rain set in.
Moreover, from the hourly observations (the Met Office will have 10 minute data [or better] from this AWS), I'd suggest that the bulk of this PPN fell from a time a short time before 13Z to just after 14Z.
I've had a look at the archive radar on MeteoX.com but the resolution available there isn't good enough to fine-tune the above.
Martin.
