Re: 21st January 2017 - Coldest day for quite a while

A welcome change in air-mass! Yesterday's continental raw cold air and grey skies have been replaced by lovely Atlantic air and sunshine. It is 6 degrees warmer than this time yesterday and with the DP over 7 degrees warmer, the southerly breeze felt pleasant and soft. Today's maximum was 10.2C; dar...

21st January 2017 - Coldest day for quite a while

I am fairly confident in thinking it is not going to get any warmer today. The maximum temperature reached today was 4.2°C, this makes it the coldest day maximum since the 25th March 2013 (3.8°C). After 3 days of cloudless skies and dazzling sunshine, today was overcast. No doubt contributing to the...

17th January - Rain in an Anticyclone

My aneroid barometer was telling very big porky pies this afternoon whilst I was watching the rain and drizzle fall. A mild, damp, murky, misty day with 2.6 mm of rain and an air pressure of 1036 hPa (and currently rising). With the hills shrouded in mist and light rain, you could be forgiven for th...

The Winter Cold Spell - A Glancing Blow...

There were dozens of Met office warnings aimed at this area of Devon for Thursday (12th January); everyone got excited at the prospect of snow. There was an awful lot of staring out of the office windows willing the rain to turn to snow despite a temperature stuck at 7°C with a dew point at 6°C - no...

Re: 10/12 air frost days

Greg, out of the last 14 days (going back to the 26th Dec) there have been an unusually high amount of frosts here too, one of them 'severe'. There have been 5 air frosts with the coldest being -4.3°C on the 3rd Jan. Anything below -2°C ranks as a rather hard frost for here and are quite unusual. Mo...

27th December 2016 - High Air Pressure

This came as a bit of surprise when I uploaded my data due to being distracted by the festivities of the season.... According to my VP2+ the air pressure peaked at 1043.9 hPa on the 27th December at 11:00. Checking my air pressure records going back to May 2005, that was the highest pressure I have ...

Re: November 2016 - Sunny so far but cold by night

Same up here, great clear nights for observing, but a few cold overnight minimums too. Richard, hasn't been so sunny recently with the total today (24th) down to 56% of the possible sunshine but that is still above the average. Despite the cloud and rain, we still managed 18 hours of sunshine for t...

Re: Storm Angus - 20th November 2016

And another deluge today!

A total of 46 mm today and still climbing.

Many of the lanes and smaller roads are flooded and impassable around here. The River Otter is over 2 metres above its normal level, this being the highest since 2012.

At least its mild...... currently 10°C (19:30).

Storm Angus - 20th November 2016

Driving back along the coast road between Branscombe & Sidmouth last night was an interesting experience. With the wind and torrential rain forming fast moving horizontal 'fogs' of spray with leaves and twigs mixed in reminded me more of a hurricane. The windscreen wipers were over-whelmed as were t...

November 18th - First <10°C Day, brrrr!

It came as a big shock to the system.... Nasty cold rain and a maximum today of only 7.1°C making it the first sub-10°C day since the 20th March and the lowest maximum since the 20th January. I even saw that there had been a dusting of snow on the top of the Blackdown Hills. Blimey, rather unusual f...
