My perception is that winters are getting wetter in S. Devon.
I am not sure how true this is but the graph below hints at this.

.... similar for this neck of the woods IMO: this is the record for nearby Hurn airport, based on Met Office published (web) data. Dashed line is linear trend over the entire series, and the grey/solid line is the 10-year rolling total.

The trend in North Staffordshire is much the same for the period from 1985, but if I include my earlier records from 1977 it is less impressive. In this area there was quite a decline in rainfall from 1977 to 1984.

Seems you missed the very wet winter of 2013/14 in N Staffs Paul.
Only 300 mm as opposed to 600mm at Hurn!
93/94 seems to be your wettest at 375 mm,
514 mm in Wembury,
my second wettest in my record and not far off 543 mm in 2013/14.
Clearly Newcastle- under-Lyme is in a rain shadow, and no where near as wet as the south coast in winter.
