Revised/Additional wMO cloud names

Post by Martin Rowley » Thu Mar 23, 2017 8:56 am

... The WMO announced yesterday (Wednesday/22nd) that several additional cloud classification terms have now been added to the formal listing in the International Cloud Atlas:

story here:

and link to on-line cloud atlas here:
https://www.wmocloudatlas.org/home.html

This latter resource is very 'full' and as well as indicating 'typical' imagery associated with each type of cloud - after a bit of hunting about there are links to typical radiosonde ascents for the entry.

Hours of fun!

Martin.

... had a quick look: several new 'names' (mostly supplementary features, but one new 'species') which are of interest ...
volutus (detached roll cloud)
asperitas (chaotic, 'sea-surface-like' appearance)
cavum (associated with fall-streak/hole-punch phenomena)
fluctus (KHI features)

not exhaustive, and don't rely on my summary(!) - but worth digging around to find them all: link to the classification listing is here . . .
