April chill

Post by Len Wood » Sat Apr 23, 2016 10:47 pm

So far to 23rd, my April mean temperature is 9.3°C.
Although below average (10°C), this is only the 5th coldest in the April record from 2001.

Here are the colder ones:

2001 8.9°C
2008 8.9°C
2012 8.5°C
2013 7.9°C

There is much talk of how cold it is for late April and it being linked to the anomalously cold mid-N Atlantic.
I am not convinced this has so much influence as it was the same for Apr 2015 and then the mean was 10.8°C.

April 1-25, Farnborough:

Mean Max: 13.8C
Mean min: 4.1C
Mean: 9.0C

All three figures are exactly equal to the estimated long term average figures! But as the temperature for the final 5 days of the month will almost certainly be below these figures, the month will finish slightly colder than average. March and April cold; will May make it a hat trick of cold months?

We had a shower with soft hail (graupel) and some snow flakes as well late this afternoon.

April mean temp. was 9.0°C.
1 deg.C below the 2001-2010 average.

Still the 5th coldest since 2001. See above.

Rain total was 57 mm. Average is 64 mm.

It is noteworthy that colder than average Aprils are usually drier than average.
An exception is April 2001 with mean temp. of 8.9°C and rain of 124 mm.

April 2016:

Mean maximum = 13.6°C
Mean minimum = 3.9°C
Mean = 8.8°C
Rain = 38.4 mm
Sunshine = 186.1 hours.

A colder then average month though the mean maximum temperature was actually around or slightly above average. The abundance of cold, clear and starry nights made for a much lower than average mean minimum temperature enhanced by this river valley location.

Not as cold as April 2012 or 2013.
