Monthly Sty Head Rain Gauge, Cumbria

Post by GT Woodin » Wed Oct 04, 2023 8:59 am

Does anyone know if this is still current. I understand that it was read monthly by Environment Agency staff.
I've seen an article by S. Burt and P. Eden suggesting that it recorded a higher monthly rainfall amount in November 2009, (record monthly rainfall in the British Isles), than the nearby daily reporting EA r/gauges at Seathwaite and Honister Pass.

Going back to my schooldays, we were taught that the Lake District's radial drainage pattern, caused convergence of air up the various valleys, and the centre of this convergence was in the vicinity of Scafell Pike/Seathwaite.

As Sty Head is a little nearer to The Pike than Seathwaite, and at a higher altitude, I can well believe this location is the wettest place in England, with the caveat that there may be wetter places without gauges!
