Re: Asperatus?

... I wouldn't be calling that cloud (as in original post) as anything other than Sc stratiformis opacus undulatus. Not even mammatus (from that shot - but photos can be notoriously deceptive). Asperatus/Asperatis has a much more "tortured"/intorted look about it . . . see examples here:- http://clo...

East Dorset: notably dry July 2016

July 2016 rainfall: West Moors & Hurn (East Dorset) For West Moors (data since 2007) = 6.1 mm, easily the driest July [ and driest *any* month ] in that 10 year record: %age based on eLTA (1981-2010) = 13% For Hurn (data since 1957) = 12.0 mm [provisional/based on SYNOP data], the *second*-driest Ju...

Re: July 2016 - Warm, muggy and dry so far

Martin, I'm surprised your LTA maximum is running at -2°C! ... as of yesterday / 12th, the Hurn average maximum temperature is 20.2degC: the LTA (from actual data) for 1971-2000 = 21.9degC (-1.7C) and for 1981-2010 = 22.1degC (-1.9C). For my own (highly sheltered) site, and using estimated data, th...

Re: July 2016 - Warm, muggy and dry so far

As with June this July is turning out to be another fairly warm but rather humid month. And as with June, sunshine levels are still suffering. All days have been easily over 20°C but there have been no really warm days with the warmest being only 23.9°C (8th). ... further east of you, the 'warmth' ...

Re: June 2016 - Low sunshine amounts

June 2016 (SE Dorset): A notably sunless month: using Hurn data (ex. SYNOPs) the total = 116 hours (Kipp/Zonen), which 'roughly' equates to 140 hr on the older CSR instrument. These figures represent around 61% of the 'all series' mean [ASM/1969-2015] and places June 2016 as either the 2nd or 3rd du...

Re: Rainfall at Kenley

I heard on the Radio 4 forecast early this morning that 48mm of rain fell at Kenley in Surrey during yesterdays storms.Does any know what time and over what time period this fell? I had thunder at my location around midday and further thunder during the evening but only recorded 6.3mm up to 09h thi...

Re: Difficult Bank Holiday forecast

So, after all the various forecasts of rain on Bank Holiday Monday, it turned out to be a dry day here in Farnborough (and across most of the country from what I have seen). .... [snip] but the point is that computer models are no substitute for a weather forecaster with experience! ... All forecas...

Philip Eden

... I was one of those worried about Philip Eden - though unfortunately I couldn't do much to help except to be encouraging in my emails. I see from an insert in the latest Bulletin that things are not well with Philip and that he's unlikely ever to resume his meteorological 'life': this is distress...

Re: Daily Weather Reports on-line

... Well done Roger! I think I'll access them 'as and when' but for anyone delving into British weather history covered by these data, the online access is going to be invaluable.

And thanks for putting a note in the latest Bulletin.

Martin.
