Re: A faulty sheathed max. thermometer

Nick, my old 'faithful' maximum sheathed thermometer that I have had for over 20 years developed a gap in the mercury column after I had dropped (fell onto grass so didn't break) meaning that it continually over-read by about 0.6°C. No matter what I did I couldn't get rid of that gap. Then I thought...

Re: July 2016 now wetter in Stornoway than in 2015

I remember the summer of 1995 well. I had just graduated from University and spent most of that summer surfing either at Sennen in the far west of Cornwall or Croyde in north Devon. I have memories of day after day of baking hot weather and the countryside turning brown. I've never been able to equa...

Re: July 2016 now wetter in Stornoway than in 2015

Edward, and at the other end of these Isles: The last rainfall we had here was 1.0 mm on the 12th and the monthly total is at just 3.3 mm. I would say we are in environmental drought conditions with the countryside starting to look rather 'cappuccino' brown. Something more like my memories of late J...

The Remarkable Month of July 2013

This July (2016) is starting to be a rather lovely, warm, dry and increasingly sunny month. But it cannot even compare in anyway to one of the most remarkable summer months I have ever experienced and that is the July of 2013. After a cold spring followed a pleasant, dry and fairly sunny June. Then ...

Re: 16th & 17th July 2016 - High dewpoints & UV

Dewpoint reached 21.0°C here this afternoon and with an air temperature of 27.0°C at the same time it felt more like the humidity and heat of the Med than the pastoral south Devonshire coast. The dewpoint is a new record high for me beating the previous one of 20.9°C set on the 19th August 2012. UV ...

16th & 17th July 2016 - High dewpoints & UV

This weekend has been a humid one with long sunny intervals and despite a sea breeze, a warm one too. Today the dewpoint reached 21°C and hovered around 19°C - 20°C for much of the afternoon and with a temperature of between 24°C and 26°C, it made for at times, a quite oppressive feeling day remindi...

Re: July 2016 - Warm, muggy and dry so far

Warm Nick? Certainly not here a bit west of you on SW Devon coast. My mean maximum temperature (1st - 14th) now at 21.5°C (+0.5°C) though a few cold nights for the time of year recently have brought the mean temperature down to just below my eLTA at -0.2°C. Now very dry in the garden with only 4.6 ...

Re: July 2016 - Warm, muggy and dry so far

Martin, I'm surprised your LTA maximum is running at -2°C! My very estimated LTA has my maximum temperature anomaly at +0.6°C. Today was definitely not a warm day and the first day this month not to acheive at least 20°C with a maximum of 19.1°C, making it the coldest day since the 29th June. It als...

July 2016 - Warm, muggy and dry so far

As with June this July is turning out to be another fairly warm but rather humid month. And as with June, sunshine levels are still suffering. All days have been easily over 20°C but there have been no really warm days with the warmest being only 23.9°C (8th). Despite the forecast of cool, cloudy co...

3rd July 2016 - A Return of the Sea Breeze

After what seems like a summer so far without sea breezes, they made a dramatic and much appreciated come back today. A generally cloudy morning though at times the sun could be glimpsed, barely any wind to speak of and it was variable in direction. Then at just after 13:00 a wind picked up from the...
