Re: High September minimum temperature

On the 6th my overnight minimum was 18.4°C and is a new high minimum for September since setting up this weather station in 2005, though many September nights have come close. An example is 2006 which had several minimums around 18.0°C. This is high for any month here in my rural, lowland valley loc...

Re: August 2016 - Sunny, settled and dry.......

Well, it hasn't been quite as 'settled' recently but a glorious day with unbroken sunshine and warm again too. The 7th cloudless day this month. The sunshine for this August has now passed the total for July and is topping off the meteorological 'summer' in fine fashion. Though September is usually ...

Re: August 2016 - Another dry one?

Dry here on the edge of Nottingham as well. Until Thursday 18th I had recorded just 15% of LTA. Yesterday, Friday, brought 11.7mm, bringing August rainfall up to 21mm, 35% of LTA. I would prefer not to have too much more rainfall this month as my daughter and family are on holiday in Devon! It seem...

Re: Funnel cloud off South Uist, Outer Hebrides on 9 Aug

The 2nd dreadful summer in a row continues here in NW Scotland, with nearly 3 inches of rain falling over the past week (6 inches since 20 July), and there's been zero sunshine for 5 days-in-a-row now (following a total of only 73hrs in July). We may yet have the wettest summer on record, based on ...

Re: Funnel cloud off South Uist, Outer Hebrides on 9 Aug

Edward, at least you're getting 'some' weather as here it has been one of the most benign summers for quite a while. We've had nothing that noteworthy since the thunderstorms of mid-June. Your photo of the funnel cloud reminds me of one I saw in Birmingham (where I was a research student) in July 19...

August 2016 - Sunny, settled and dry.......

The sunshine total for August passed 100 hours this evening making for another fine, warm day in what is turning out to be another lovely summer month. No rain since the morning of the 2nd and everything is looking parched again. Only one 'wash-out' day of the summer so far and that was the 1st Augu...

August 2016 - Another dry one?

With just 5.9 mm of rainfall, July was the driest of any month I have ever recorded since before May 2005, though many have come close. Then on the 1st of August, 25.5 mm of very welcome rain fell in one day and it has been dry ever since. The countryside did 'green up' a little but is now reverting...

Re: Thermometers v AWS sensors

Richard, I have minimum and maximum thermometers in a Stevenson Screen alongside the AWS thermo/humidity probe within the screen. Over the years I have come to rely on the daily task of reading the sheathed thermometers less and less. The Davis AWS actually reads pretty much the same as the normal s...

Re: East Dorset: notably dry July 2016

Martin, July here was the driest of any month I have recorded since setting up my station in May 2005, though a few months have come close such as September 2014 that had 9.8 mm from one thundery downpour. This July's rainfall was just 5.9 mm. Interestingly, my Davis tipping bucket recorder measured...

Re: July 2016 - Warm, muggy and dry so far

The warm, dry and muggy theme of this July continues unabated. Despite the promise of rain (again), nothing fell today (again) and the monthly total (gauge not TBR) still stands at 4.5 mm. The high humidity has been so characteristic of this month (and the summer so far) and today is no exception wi...
