Re: Orange Sun

Thank you for the quick response, Nicholas, and my apologies for not replying earlier. Yes, the blip on my barograph was a sudden dip of around 1mb a little after 05.00. Difficult to get a precise time from a standard small-pattern barograph. There was then a slight rebound followed by a slow fall i...

Re: Orange Sun

Same effect here. Most eery. According to a weather bulletin (BBC) the colour was due to a mix of Saharan sand and smoke from wildfires in Portugal. Sky cleared by mid-afternoon, but wind very strong by then. Interesting blip on my barograph chart at about 05.15 BST this morning. Did a front pass? I...

Re: Dry start to April

Similar picture here just to the north of Nottingham. 1st April gave a pathetic 0.3mm, and there has been nothing since. My long-term average for April is 52.4mm, with yearly variation comparable with Len's - 6.3mm in 2011 and 155.4mm in 2012. The rainfall from a range of sites reported in the Times...

Re: Wick for wetbulb mercury thermometer

Good morning all, and commiserations to those suffering from wick deficiency. Seriously, I too am concerned about Bill Read. Last September I ordered barograph charts from him. They were delivered very promptly as always, but my cheque, dated 3rd September 2016, has not been cashed. I have tried to ...

Re: Heavy hoar frost deposits during recent cold weather

We have had some heavy hoar frosts here on the edge of Sherwood Forest, but not as spectacular as yours, Eddie! Yesterday (Monday 5th) the hoar frost melted very suddenly starting at about 10.00 and had almost gone by 10.15. This saved me the trouble of scraping the car windows.

Re: Storm Angus - 20th November 2016

A damp but very windy Sunday 20th here at Arnold/Mapperley Plains, with just 4.5mm rain. A different story on Monday 21st with heavy rain during the day and again overnight, yielding 33.5mm at the 09.00 obs this morning. This is my third highest daily rainfall in November since my records began in 1...

Re: Dry spell in SE England

34.9mm here in Nottinghamshire so far this month (65% of long term average). Two really wet days - 9th with 13.3mm and 15th with 9.1mm. Two days with fog in the morning (14th and 15th) but no thunder, lightning or anything exciting.

Asperatus?

I witnessed this cloud formation yesterday Saturday 17th September 2016 at 10.15UTC here at Arnold, Nottinghamshire, looking NW. The cloud formation was visible for a couple of hours or so. Are they the 'new' Asperatus type? I would appreciate the views of those with greater knowledge than mine. Reg...

Re: August 2016 - Another dry one?

Dry here on the edge of Nottingham as well. Until Thursday 18th I had recorded just 15% of LTA. Yesterday, Friday, brought 11.7mm, bringing August rainfall up to 21mm, 35% of LTA. I would prefer not to have too much more rainfall this month as my daughter and family are on holiday in Devon! Seriousl...
