Here are the colder ones: 2001 8.9°C 2008 8.9°C 2012 8.5°C 2013 7.9°C In Penzance 9.3C (-0.8C) so far Coldest since 1991:- 2013 8.6 2012 8.9 1998 9.1 1994 9...

Re: Philip Eden

Yes it is sad. I have been in contact by email since my early days on USW (some time ago now!) and regarded him as a friend. The minimum thermometer in my screen was a gift from Philip. I had a good idea of the cause of his problems, but only realised how serious it was when he went quiet. He will c...

Storm Imogen, extreme sea conditions West Cornwall

West Cornwall caught the brunt of Storm Imogen on Monday 8th. The swell peaked at 38’at Sevenstone’s, off Land's End, a height which has a 10 year return period. This is almost identical to the heights reached in March 2008 & in 2014, so the 10 year return period may need reviewing! It is important ...

Re: Penzance Ball Lightning?

i) Jan 1995 when I stayed in Reading: There was a powerful hail and thunderstorm during the night (it is mentioned in Roger's and Stephen's book '100 years of Reading weather'), with lightning striking Christchurch near the University, and there was also supposed incidence of ball lightning some di...

Re: Penzance Ball Lightning?

Thanks Martin. Unfortunately, due to the time (04:30), virtually no-one was up an about to describe what preceded the bang. It was the only flash of lightning during the event. Apart the damage done it was the unusual nature of the sound, typical of an explosion rather than thunder, that was notable...

Penzance Ball Lightning?

With the higher than normal SSTs, and unstable air, hail has fallen every day in Penzance since 8th. The 9th & 10th also saw thunder. There was a lightning strike at 04:30 on 10th that was rather unusual. It struck a pole a few hundred yards from me and did a fair bit of damage locally. Routers expl...

Re: Increasing annual rainfall

In Penzance, mean rainfall:- 1961-1990 1140.0mm 1971-2000 1189.3mm 1981-2010 1219.6mm 2010-2015 1245.1mm So there seems to have been an gradual upward trend for the last 50 years! I also noticed your post on USW about lack of warming in reccent years. In Penzance, whilst the temperature has been fla...
